Colorado's Amendment 48

Now, I don't normally go into politics in my blog, but this one really has me a bit concerned. I'm talking about Amendment 48 which would amend Colorado's CONSTITUTION to "define the term "person" to "include any human being from the moment of fertilization"; and apply this definition of person to the sections of the Colorado Constitution that protect the natural and
essential rights of persons, allow open access to courts for every person, and ensure that no person has his or her life, liberty, or property taken away without due process of law."

This law would in effect ban abortions and would actually make an abortion murder. It would also make abortions illegal even when the life of the mother or the baby are in jeopardy and in the case of rape or incest. It would also end up dictating laws as far as infertility treatments go. So, if a couple decides that they would like to have IVF in order to fulfil their dreams of having a baby, this "amendment" would make that near impossible. On the other end of the spectrum, this law would effectively make more forms of birth control (the Pill, IUD) illegal as they do not prevent the sperm from meeting the egg, they just prevent it from developing. So in essence, we would have couples who want children to not be able to use medical technology to get them (even if that is their only hope) thousands of unwanted pregnancies, where the mother was raped, and even more suffering in the case where the mother is suffering from an ectopic pregnancy (which in most cases is deadly if not treated) or if the baby is severely deformed. Is it better to have the baby who will live a short and non-quality life or to end the pregnancy before any real suffering starts?

I am not saying that I am pro-abortion, and I don't think that this amendment is really meant to be just pro-life, but there are so many holes in it, and so much room for disaster it is scary. So please, if you live in Colorado, vote NO on amendment 48!!

I am editing this to include a link to the girl (yes, she is just a girl) who is the sponsor of this Amendment...may I present...Miss Kristi Burton

  1. There is lots more information on this - and many ways to take action - at Birth Control Watch (http://birthhcontrolwatch.org). It was set up as a resource to guarantee that women know about these threats -- and to offer some ways to take action. One is to get local candidates to declare a position on this - and other efforts to thwart access to contraceptives. You can get information on all of it at Birth Control Watch - and its blog. Take a look.

  2. I can not believe this! WOW! I am glad I do not live in Colorado. It is my body - my right. I am against abortion personally unless it is medically necessary - but HOW CAN THE GOVT TELL A WOMAN WHAT TO DO WITH HER BODY! Isn't there a way for the baby to be transplanted out of the woman and into a tube or something if the father wants it?
